The Senate will vote to acquit Donald Trump in the nation’s third ever impeachment trial.
And there’s nothing Mitt Romney can do about it.
Sure, there is a group of senators that question the events related to the Ukraine. Unfortunately, these same senators didn’t mind when Biden threatened to withhold a BILLION dollars in order to get his son off the proverbial hook. But despite the hypocrisy, the Senate doesn’t come close to the two-thirds majority needed to convict the president.
Not only is the senate majority Republican, but the constitution sets a very high bar for crimes involving the President. Thus, Romney is just trying to latch on to Trump’s publicity one more time.

One key Republican, Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah, announced on the Senate floor that he was breaking with his party. Romney appeared to choke up as he spoke of his deep faith and “oath before God” demanding that he vote for impeachment.
“The president is guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust,” Romney said on the Senate floor. “What the president did was wrong, grievously wrong.”
The final outcome expected Wednesday caps nearly five months of remarkable impeachment proceedings launched in Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s House, ending in Mitch McConnell’s Senate and reflective of the nation’s unrelenting partisan divide three years into the Trump presidency.
No president has ever been removed by the Senate, and Trump arrived at the Capitol for his State of the Union address on the eve of the vote eager to use the tally as vindication, a political anthem in his reelection bid. Allies chanted “four more years!”
The president did not mention impeachment. The mood was tense in the House that impeached him. Pelosi tore up the speech when he was done.
Romney vs. Trump
If you ask me, Romney just wants a place in the headlines. Thus, he’s making the rounds, passing out interviews like Halloween candy.
As Fox News tells it:
Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, told Fox News’ Chris Wallace Wednesday in an exclusive interview that he “had to follow my conscience” in deciding to vote to convict President Trump on abuse of power, a decision that’s likely to ignite serious blowback from Trump and others in the Republican Party.
“I believe that the act he took, an effort to corrupt an election is as destructive an attack on the oath of office and our Constitution as I can imagine,” Romney said. “It is a high crime and misdemeanor within the meaning of the Constitution, and that is not a decision I take lightly. It is the last decision I want to take.”
Romney later told Wallace: “I had to follow my conscience,” when asked about the likely blowback from Trump.
Obviously, Romney is bitter. He has two failed attempts at running for President. One of them was against Obama. I’m guessing that one really stings. Especially considering Obama’s legacy is that of the worst president in history.
And even though Romney wants to appear stoic, it’s clear. He’s shaking in his shorts.
“I understand there’s going to be enormous consequence,” he said, “and I don’t have a choice in that regard. That’s why — that’s why I haven’t been anxious to be in the position I’m in.”
That’s code for “I know I’m about to get my ass kicked.”
Of course, Adam Schiff is tickled pink to have Romney on his side.
“You can’t trust this president to do the right thing, not for one minute, not for one election, not for the sake our country,” Schiff intoned. “He will not change. And you know it.”
